Indie Filmmaking: VFX tools

As a filmmaker, I always get asked,  "What programs did I use to do X?". Well, today I'm giving the answers.  I will go through some of the composting software, tools and websites that I use to help make some of my films.

HITFILM Pro

This software is a powerful tool for creating Visual Effects. It comes with many plugins and works well with many other plugins (such as Red Giant products). It has 2D and 3D tracking, 3D importing support and Video editing capabilities all in one program. It cost $349, with no subscriptions! If the cost is too high for you, they even have a free version known as "Hitfilm Express" that gives you quite a bit of power too. One of the best things about Hitfilm, other than the software itself, is its community. If you don't know how to use something, they will be one of the most helpful resources. Check out their site for more details at  http://hitfilm.com/.

ACTIONVFX

From time to time you may not feel like creating every effect from scratch, enter ActionVFX. This site has great stock footage to choose from for your visual effects. From debris, fire, explosions... you name it, they have it. Their library grows every month with good quality stock footage. https://www.actionvfx.com/

ACTION ESSENTIALS 2

Here is another set of stock footage that comes in handy when you need some explosions, bullet shells and more. I tend to use this alot when I don't feel like making gun shots. It works well with all compositing software, such as After Effects and Hitfilm. They have many other products that come in handy too. https://www.videocopilot.net/products/action2/

I hope some of these VFX tools help you on your action/sci-fi filmmaking journey. Tell me other filmaking topics you may want to be covered here. Leave your comments and questions below. Also follow me on Instagram and Twitter @keicoii
