Not a big fan of making Music Videos but...

It was really fun. The process of jumping back into the saddle of filming music videos was hard work. With no crew and a tight budget, I had to put on the thinking cap and roll up the sleeves. But the finished product turned out great! The artist, Stephanie Samuels, was a joy to work with. Check out her new single, “I Surrender” on all streaming music platforms: https://iamstephaniesamuels.onuniverse.com/

“I Surrender” by Stephanie Samuels Available on Spotify, iTunes & Distro Kid

It's been a long time....

4 YEARS!!! So much has happened since I’ve been away. In all that time I worked on many features, won many awards, and learned a ton. Now it’s time to get back to it. Looking forward to sharing my journey from here on out, not as a filmmaker but as a “filmpreneur”. In this time away I was a DP on 2 feature films, A producer on 5 feature films, a stunt coordinator/ fight choreographer on 8 feature films, and finished my 2nd full feature film. But I’m tired of keeping it all in the dark. From here on out it’s you and me on this very interesting journey.

Filmmaking: How to make Fight Scenes (For the Martial Artist and the Regular guy)

I meet a lot of filmmakers who want to make action movies and in particular put fight scenes in their film. Fight scenes are an inexpensive way to show off some intense action, if done correctly. I will address a few things in this article to help you get the desired results you want for your film.

In The Beginning...

To start off, treat your fight scene like you treat your whole movie.  Your movie has a story and style, so should your fight scene. Decide what type of fight this is going to be. Why are they fighting?  What are the personalities of the characters who are fighting? Do they know martial arts or not?  What is the goal of each character in the fight? These questions should get you started in making the fight sequence and help you determine what should happen during the fight.

Once you get that together, you’ll begin the physical portion of making a fight. One common thing I see in fights are really slow moving fights with really good technical form. (Martial artists, this is for you.) This happens because you are missing two other parts of the equation of the fight, that’s rhythm and purpose. As a martial artist, we get stuck in technical soundness to appease our brothers in martial arts and forget a movie is to also entertain. Remember, this not a technical demo, but a fight scene with a purpose within the story. It’s ok to make it technically sound, but keep it entertaining.

Purpose for the fight

Next is purpose. Each movement should have an action and reaction. For every punch or kick thrown, there should be a reaction to that punch or kick. Pay attention to see if there are any spaces in between your fight combinations to keep continuous action flowing.  If you notice a space, fill it with an action that makes sense from the last action’s movement. If space makes sense or adds dramatic effect in between fight segments, keep it. Do what feels right for the fight.

Move to a Rhythm

Then comes rhythm.  Rhythm helps your timing of each movement to prevent painful mistakes that may come in making fights. Begin to look at your fight like a dance and your movements should move to a beat. Once you understand your timing, it usually helps your muscles remember your moves.  A helpful hint is to practice to a song with the rhythm you want your fight to move to.

In the End...

To wrap this all together comes performance. What I see in a lot in indie films is the acting stops once the fight starts. The actors do the movements, but don’t act out the pain of the hits being taken. Here’s the truth about fights on film, your fight will look as good as whoever gets beat up the best. If someone throws an awesome kick and the person receiving the kick barely moves, the fight looks fake and tame. The person receiving the kick has to sell the kick to make it look like it has power. And finally practice, Practice, PRACTICE! To get the movements in your muscles’ memory. On film day your crew will thanks you. Trust me.

I hope I gave you some insight on making your next fight scene. Sunday, June 18th, I will be giving a lecture on fights and stunts at the Horror Hotel Film Festival in Hudson, Ohio. Hope to see you there, because I will be giving you even more information. Leave your comments below and share some of your experiences.

3 lies filmmakers tell

Red SCARLET-W

I have been a filmmaker for over 10 years now and boy, has it been an adventure.  I have had my ups and downs professionally and personally over the years. I’ve also worked with other filmmakers, which has been a pleasure, and seen many sets. Through careful observation and after reading many discussion panels, I realize that many filmmakers say things that are not exactly true when it comes to filmmaking. Here are 3 “lies” that some filmmakers tell budding filmmakers just starting.

You’re not making a movie if you don’t shoot with a RED Camera.

Now, I won’t deny that this happens with other cameras too. However, I read so many forums where filmmakers say this and discourage new filmmakers from even starting to make a film. “Camera Envy” seems to hold new filmmakers back from even starting a movie and sends them on an endless journey of finding the perfect camera to film their movie. News Flash, there is NO perfect camera! “This shot is too grainy and dark. I need a new camera with high ISO.” No, buy some lights. “My handheld shots are too shaky I need a new camera with IBIS.” Not necessarily, get a tripod. A movie isn’t as good as your camera. There is other equipment involved in making a film that could give your movie a “look”.  Lights, set design, shot composition and art direction go a long way. As cliché as it sounds, the person behind the camera is more important than the camera. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with wanting to get a new camera because of those features, but don’t be held back from making a movie because your don’t have the camera you want.

I knew I wanted to be a filmmaker when I watched this “Oscar Nominated” or “Award winning” Movie.

I hear filmmakers say that they watched some Oscar nominated or award winning movie and that’s when they wanted to be a filmmaker. But as you talk further with them, you’ll find that they watched many movies, most far from Oscar or award winning worthy that really made them want to be a filmmaker. I almost feel like they believe they have to say this to other filmmakers to seem more intelligent. They don’t want anyone to find out the real moment they wanted to be a filmmaker was when they watched “the Toxic Avenger”.  “No, no, no. When I watched “Stand and Deliver”, I knew I wanted to be a filmmaker.” Now I’m not saying that it’s not possible for that to actually be the reason for some, but most watched a really crappy movie by today’s standards and wanted to be a filmmaker. They watched a movie that seemed fun and that inspired them to want to do it. So… it’s ok to like “Batman V Superman” and that be the reason for YOU to want to be a filmmaker. (I laughed a little there.)

You have never seen “X” Movie?! You need to watch these movies to understand filmmaking.

Boy, I see this said a lot. Most filmmakers are film watchers but, filmmakers sometimes can be film snobs. They will make you feel less than a filmmaker if you have never seen this or that movie. The truth is you will watch the type of movies you are going to make. You don’t have to watch “Citizen Kane” if that’s not the type of movies you will make. If you want to make dramas, you will watch dramas and study everything about how they are made to prepare for your film. That goes for any other genre. You more than likely will make your way to the classics of that genre, but don’t worry if you haven’t seen “Gone with the wind” or “Schindler’s List”. You probably aren’t making that type of movie. Trust me there are a lot of movie with good cinematography techniques in the genre you love.

I hope this is helpful to you filmmakers out there. Don’t let others stop your filmmaking progress. Press forward to your goal and reap your reward. If you have any views that you might want to share leave a comment or even a question. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Indie Filmmaking: VFX tools

As a filmmaker, I always get asked,  "What programs did I use to do X?". Well, today I'm giving the answers.  I will go through some of the composting software, tools and websites that I use to help make some of my films.

HITFILM Pro

This software is a powerful tool for creating Visual Effects. It comes with many plugins and works well with many other plugins (such as Red Giant products). It has 2D and 3D tracking, 3D importing support and Video editing capabilities all in one program. It cost $349, with no subscriptions! If the cost is too high for you, they even have a free version known as "Hitfilm Express" that gives you quite a bit of power too. One of the best things about Hitfilm, other than the software itself, is its community. If you don't know how to use something, they will be one of the most helpful resources. Check out their site for more details at  http://hitfilm.com/.

ACTIONVFX

From time to time you may not feel like creating every effect from scratch, enter ActionVFX. This site has great stock footage to choose from for your visual effects. From debris, fire, explosions... you name it, they have it. Their library grows every month with good quality stock footage. https://www.actionvfx.com/

ACTION ESSENTIALS 2

Here is another set of stock footage that comes in handy when you need some explosions, bullet shells and more. I tend to use this alot when I don't feel like making gun shots. It works well with all compositing software, such as After Effects and Hitfilm. They have many other products that come in handy too. https://www.videocopilot.net/products/action2/

I hope some of these VFX tools help you on your action/sci-fi filmmaking journey. Tell me other filmaking topics you may want to be covered here. Leave your comments and questions below. Also follow me on Instagram and Twitter @keicoii

Titanfall 2: One small step forward, 2 big steps back

So this weekend was pretty fun. I got to spend time with the family and play the alpha test for Titanfall 2. I was pretty excited to see the things that they added to the game, but to my surprise they made big changes to the core gameplay. You have to rodeo a titan 3 times to take it down ( I didn't have a problem with that.) I barely got into a titan because it's completely based on how you play, without an automatic timer. (If you're not in titans half the time, then it becomes Call of Duty BO 3. An okay one at that.)  I played the game mode called "hardpoint" most of the time, which I always find fun. I found that aiming was tighter and more on point (even when running on walls) and the maps have many places to run and hide. The additional gadgets like the grappling hook and sonar knife are really cool. But overall, the game is fun. They really need to take the gameplay back to what it was, add more new maps, keep the gadgets and give us the single player offline mode that we asked for and then it will be the game I have always hoped for. I have some gameplay footage from the Rad Brad below so you can get a feel for what I played.

Update 8/27

So I went back to playing this weekend to see if any of the demands made by the fans made this weeks cut and... They did a pretty good job. Titans are more accessible this time around and I believe matchmaking is much better. The gameplay is very fluid and aiming is pretty solid. I started to get moments like the first one where I wished someone saw what I just did. This made me hope that they will make a single player bot option for the multiplayer mode. (I don't have time to wait for matchmaking all the time.) Looking forward to October 28th. See you then Pilots.

Star Wars Battlefront finally finished the game!

As someone who still plays video games time to time and being a star wars fan, I always get a hankering for some star wars video game action.  Well, last November many of my friends and I went out and got the game. To some of our surprise there was no real single player mode. They created a horde style mode where you fight 15 waves of enemies as a generic star wars character or one of the heroes or villains. The maps were basic at best and when they created new maps (one for free I might add) I couldn't play in them unless it was multiplayer. I was quite disappointed. Even John Boyega (co-star in the Force Awakens) wanted to know where the single player campaign was. The only good news was split screen co-op. I wanted to get rid of the game because it lacked any reason for me to come back to it as it got old... real fast. I carried a hope that they would add a single player mode of some sort, but with EA things like that usually don't happen.

Fast Forward to July 2016 and EA finally listens to fans and adds a single player experience called Skirmish mode. This mode give you the Walker Assault  and Fighter Squadron modes in an offline single player or split-screen co-op experience. YAY! I can play the way I want to offline or online. Only if Titanfall would have done that, I wouldn't have a $60 paperweight. I guess I'll take a part 2 instead.

5 Video Game hidden gems

I'm a gamer. Well more of a casual gamer lately. I play when I have some time (and money).  I typically go searching for games in bargain bins or online that are obscure, overlooked and fun. (And in the budget.)The interesting thing you will find about this list is that more hidden gems were found in the past (mainly because companies don't take risks today.) Here are five games you should add to your collection, if you are looking for something different to play.

Anarchy Reigns

Released July 12, 2012 Anarchy Reigns is an arena style beat em' up that's fast and furious. Developed by Platinum Games, (Makers of Bayonetta) If you them, you know the play style frantic and stylish.

Vanquish

Released in October 19th 2010, comes another game from, you guessed it, Platinum Games. Vanquish is a shooter that's extremely fast paced and uses bullet-time so beautifully.  But don't use it too much or your mech-suit will overheat.

Starhawk

Released in May 8, 2012, Starhawk is one of my personal favorites... So much so that I did a review on it. This game is a third person shooter with real time strategy elements. You can fight in space crafts, mechs , tanks and more.

Not A Hero

Released May 14, 2015 is a downloadable title for PS4, PS Vita and PC.  This fast paced 8-bit, 2D, cover-based shooter is surprisingly good and extremely challenging.  Don't think you can go in guns a blazing or you'll find a game over rather quickly.

Furi

Released July 5, 2016, Furi, is the most recent and most expensive game on the list coming in at a price of $25. Furi is a Boss Battle style game that is a hack n' slash and twin stick shooter. And might I add extremely challenging. It also has an amazing art style and soundtrack.

Wu Xia: A Martial Arts Tango

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of working with Cleveland filmmaker Johnny K. Wu and training with a talented group of Martial Arts Actors in Wu Xia.  This was one of the more challenging films I did fight choreography for because it has multiple styles in one film. Everyone put there best into their fights and we even had some injuries, but it was well worth it. Kudos to Andrew Santin and Ben Zgorecki for having the stamina to fight five people back to back! If you're in Cleveland, we will be showing it, along with 3 other films, on the big screen November 4th at Atlas Cinemas Lakeshore 7 - 22624 Lakeshore Boulevard, Euclid, OH 44123. Get your tickets here. If you can't make it, you're in luck. Here it is for your viewing pleasure.

Marrese Crump Presents: Twin Assassins vs. Rogue Agent... Check it out!!!

As a filmmaker, I find myself looking all over the internet for new films to sink my teeth into. I found a nice little martial arts gem.  "Twin Assassins vs. Rogue Agent" , starring the Blasian Twins and Jason Croom, in a well shot short with great fighting techniques displayed. This seems to be a continuation of one of the first shorts I checked out a while back called, "The Executioner" . "Twin Assassins vs. Rogue Agent" is not more than three minutes, but packs a mean punch. I'm looking forward to where this series will continue to go. Click the button below to check it out!
